Jax Reads is now FIRST COAST READS with the addition of St. Johns and Clay
County Libraries to the program. This year we are inviting our whole community to
read THE HOUSE ON MANGO STREET by Sandra Cisneros – the story of a young
Mexican-American girl growing up in poverty in Chicago. The book is beautifully
written, almost a prose poem. When you open the door to this house you will
enter the world of Esperanza, her family, friends, and community. As with our
previous books the novel has a number of themes which can be explored in the
context of the story and in the context of our community – poverty, domestic
violence, the environment, roles of women, and family and neighborhood
relationships. It also inspires us to reflect on our own roots and share
memories with those who have roots that differ.
Please check the list below for a program in your area and join your friends to talk
about the book. We will have dramatic productions, story-tellers, book reviews and
book discussions at community and senior centers, libraries, bookstores, churches,
and other locations. Since the book iis on the reading list of many local middle and
senior high schools we hope it will generate family discussions as well.
